Our take

Anora is an R-rated dramedy about a Brooklyn strip-club worker who impulsively marries a wealthy Russian heir. Expect explicit sexual content, near-constant f-word profanity, cigarette and drunk scenes, and a violent home invasion when his family arrives. The tone mixes Cinderella fantasy with class satire and raw language. Strictly for mature older teens and adults

Uplifting themes

Resilience surfaces, but satire and chaos dominate

Story (may spoil tone)

A young sex worker from Brooklyn gets her chance at a Cinderella story when she meets and impulsively marries the son of an oligarch. Once the news reaches Russia, her fairytale is threatened as his parents set out to get the marriage annulled.

Talk after watching

  • Ani chases a fairy-tale upgrade. What does the film suggest about money and love?
  • Class and immigration tensions fuel the conflict. How do power gaps show up in relationships?
  • The story turns from romance to chaos quickly. When does fantasy become danger?
