The Death of Robin Hood

Movie 2026 123 min MA 15+ Adventure, Drama, Action
AMU 16+ * Quality ★★★☆☆

Our take

The Death of Robin Hood is an A24 revisionist thriller starring Hugh Jackman as an aging, guilt-ridden outlaw, not the heroic archer of legend. Rated R for strong bloody violence, it features brutal medieval combat, arrow impalements, mace beatings, attempted burnings, and a child shown impaled. Brief nudity appears in a non-sexual camouflage scene. Themes include assisted death, redemption, and the gap between myth and murderous reality. Bleak and slow-paced; critics were divided. Adults and older teens only, nothing like family-friendly Robin Hood adventures

Uplifting themes

Redemption and the power of honest storytelling emerge amid the grim violence Sister Brigid offers care and moral grounding; Robin himself is a deeply flawed figure

Story (may spoil tone)

Grappling with his past after a life of crime and murder, Robin Hood finds himself gravely injured after a battle he thought would be his last. In the hands of a mysterious woman, he is offered a chance at salvation.

Talk after watching

  • This Robin Hood was never the hero stories claimed. Why do legends hide uncomfortable truths?
  • Robin seeks redemption with Sister Brigid's help. Can someone atone for a violent past?
  • The film is based on a ballad where Robin dies. How does knowing the ending change how you watch?
