Our take

Wild Horse Nine is Martin McDonagh's black comedy starring John Malkovich and Sam Rockwell as CIA agents sent to Easter Island before the 1973 Chilean coup. Rated R for pervasive language, some strong violence, drug use, and sexual references. Expect McDonagh's signature dark humor mixed with gunfire, political conspiracy, JFK-assassination backstory, and morally compromised spies wrestling with guilt. Not as violent as his earlier In Bruges but mature throughout. Older teens interested in political history may engage; younger viewers will miss nuance and hear constant profanity

Uplifting themes

Meditation on memory, legacy, and consequences of actions in history's shadow Protagonists are morally compromised spies; student characters offer counterbalance

Story (may spoil tone)

Shortly before the 1973 Chilean coup, CIA agents Chris and Lee are dispatched from Santiago to Easter Island by their bureau chief, MJ. Amongst the Island's iconic statues, and as the longtime partners wrestle with their dark pasts and present conspiracies, Chris's newfound bond with a pair of rebellious students threatens to send everyone’s trip to this remote paradise sideways.

Talk after watching

  • Chris and Lee carry guilt from past CIA operations. Can people atone for government actions?
  • The film is set before Chile's 1973 coup. What do you know about that period in history?
  • McDonagh mixes comedy with dark political themes. When does humor help us face hard truths?
