Our take

Demon City is a Netflix action thriller about an ex-hitman hunting masked killers who destroyed his family. Expect relentless gunfights, stabbings, demon and possession imagery, gambling references, suicide talk, and very frequent Japanese profanity in dialogue. The tone is brutal and stylized. Adults only for most families

Uplifting themes

Protecting innocents is hinted, though revenge dominates The hero is sympathetic but solves problems through extreme violence

Story (may spoil tone)

Framed for his family's murder and left for dead, an ex-hitman will stop at nothing to exact revenge on the masked "demons" who have taken over his city.

Talk after watching

  • Revenge stories can feel satisfying on screen but costly in real life. What are healthier ways to process harm?
  • Masked villains dehumanize enemies. How do movies influence how we see good versus evil?
  • The hero was framed and left for dead. How do justice systems fail people in fiction and reality?
