Our take

Shake, Rattle and Roll: Evil Origins is a Netflix horror anthology spanning 1775, 2025, and 2050. Nuns face freed evil, friends survive a Halloween serial killer, and a future Philippines is ruled by aswang. It is rated TV-MA for injury detail and violence. Not for kids; expect jump scares, bloody kills, and sustained dread across nearly two and a half hours

Uplifting themes

Courage against evil appears, but horror dread dominates Some heroes fight back, yet many scenes reward fear over wisdom

Story (may spoil tone)

In 1775 during the Spanish colonial period in the Philippines, nuns attempts to survive the night after an unknown evil was set free in their cloister. Meanwhile in 2025, a group of friends attend a Halloween masquerade ball which was attacked by a serial killer. Fast forward to the future in 2050, a post-apocalytic Philippines is ruled by the aswang.

Talk after watching

  • Three timelines show fear in different eras. Which segment felt scariest and why?
  • Filipino folklore like aswang shapes the future story. What local legends appear where you live?
  • Anthology films tell separate scares. How does grouping stories change the mood?
